The UK government is warning of the potential impact of over-the-counter (OTC) products on erectile dysfunction drugs (EDs) by the Department of Health (DH). The move comes after a report on the safety of prescription ED drugs in the UK revealed that over-the-counter products, which can be purchased without a prescription, were linked to a significant increase in the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) and a 15% reduction in the risk of developing the condition in men over 40.
The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) issued a statement from the department in support of the decision. It said the evidence provided by the team at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) revealed that over-the-counter ED drugs, including those containing sildenafil, could cause serious health risks, particularly in men with cardiovascular disease or those taking nitrate-based drugs. It added that the products should not be used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), as they could increase the risk of ED. In addition, it said the products should only be used under the supervision of a health care professional who can assess individual health needs.
In a letter to the MHRA, the Department of Health said it would look at the evidence from the NHS perspective, and that it was not aware of any significant changes in the levels of sildenafil and nitrates or in the levels of nitric oxide in the blood in men taking prescription ED drugs.
The NICE team has identified 11 new prescription ED drugs over-the-counter, including Viagra Connect, Cialis, Levitra, Stendra and Spedra. Sildenafil is one of the more popular prescription ED drugs, with more than 10 million prescriptions filled in the UK every year.
Dr Sarah Mabry, a spokeswoman for the NICE team, said the committee was aware of the study and was reviewing it to ensure it met its needs. “The committee is taking further evidence on the safety of these products and it is working with the public to make a decision on the best way to manage the risks of these drugs,” she said. “The committee is working closely with pharmacies to ensure all products are appropriate and safe to take.”
There have been concerns over the safety of the products in relation to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and stroke, including recent findings from a study on men with low-risk heart disease who took high blood pressure medicines.
A spokesman for the NHS Research and Monitoring Centre said that the review of the evidence showed that over-the-counter (OTC) medicines contained no harmful ingredients, and that there was no risk of cardiovascular problems, such as heart attack or stroke in the patients who took them.
The department noted that there is a “need to ensure the products are safe and appropriate” in line with the health products’ safety and effectiveness. “The committee has considered all available evidence and is working with the public to make a decision on the best way to manage the risks of these drugs,” it added.
Sildenafil citrate, commonly known by the brand name, is a prescription-only medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. It works by improving blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual activity.
